There is a lot of hoopla about the hero's journey--you know the guy (in the old days, especially, the hero was usually a guy) who goes out and slays dragons or kills bad guys or otherwise demonstrates his brawn and power. But there is another journey available to us that is little publicized, let alone encouraged .and that is the journey to discover our true nature. "What's a true nature?" you might be thinking. Don't worry, you aren't the only one who doesn't have a clue. Let's face it, who said to you when you were in school: "Oh ,by the way, you aren't who you think you are." (And the truth is you can't even "think" who you are. It's more of a feeling kind of thing.) You may have been told that you have great potential (if you were lucky) but that usually meant the potential to be successful in a career of some kind. It certainly didn't indicate that you have a whole other side of you that is completely present and vibrant and filled with amazing qualities such as compassion, love and wisdom. And why would you want to find that part of you, you might ask, especially if it means doing a lot of work that you don't even get paid for .at least, not in degrees or money? Because you won't be happy until you do. You see "true happiness=meeting your true self." For real. Now that doesn't mean you aren't happy now to some degree or might be in the future. But that kind of happiness is what we'll call "conditional happiness." It is based on some external condition that you have to fulfill and if that condition should change, so does your mood. Then you have to find another source of good feelings after that one goes that one goes .. Does this sound like your life? Welcome to the world as most people know it. But more and more people are discovering that there is actually a happy gene and all we have to do to activate it is get out of our own way. Yes, the good (no great news) is that you don't have to travel to the ends of the earth or spend millions of dollars to find happiness. It is actually buried deep down inside you where you never think to look. And you never think to look there because you have been taught that who you are isn't enough somehow and in some cases, that who you are is downright unlovable. Don't believe it. Who You Really Are is loveable beyond your wildest dreams. In fact, Who You Really Are is Love It Self and is just waiting for you to do the work of finding that out for yourself. What does this involve? Well, it's a process of undoing a lot of misconceptions. It's kind of like when you believe in Santa Claus and find out he isn't real. Many of the beliefs you hold about yourself and life aren't real either. Especially the ones that cause you great stress. So as you begin to question what you have learned, and see what is really true, slowly but surely you begin to uncover your true nature. Slowly but surely you make room for it to emerge and guide your life. Slowly but surely, you defeat the dragon of your false self and stand tall in your true identity. Slowly but surely, you activate the "happy gene" and discover a part of you that is okay no matter what the external circumstances of your life. It's a journey well worth taking begin today! |
